HABITAT - TEMPERATURE
Temperature
Turtles are cold-blooded which means that their body temperature depends on their environment. Consequently, it’s important that your turtle’s environment reflects your turtle’s needs.
The ideal temperature
The ideal water temperature for turtles is between 18°C and 30°C, depending on the species. The most common turtle species require a temperature between 20°C and 26°C. Although it’s best to ask the vendor what temperature is best for your animal, your turtle will also give you a few hints: if the ambient temperature is too cold, your turtle will be a lot less agile and will barely eat.
The ambient temperature around the water is also important when it comes to keeping your turtle in good health. In general, the ambient temperature must be at least 2°C warmer than the water temperature to prevent your turtle from catching a cold or developing pneumonia.
Heating element
The ideal water temperature can be reached with a heating element. However, you should be careful: heating elements are often made of glass, which is not ideal for turtles because there’s a chance that the element will be broken, resulting in a short circuit. This could be fatal for your turtle. As such, it’s best to buy a reinforced heating element.
UV lighting
Lighting also plays an important role in maintaining your turtle’s temperature. UV lighting can mimic the effects of the sun, something your turtle is sure to love. More information about the importance of sun and other light for your turtle can be found here.
