SPECIES - RED EARED
Red-eared
Does your turtle have parallel red stripes on its cheeks? Then you may be dealing with a red-eared slider!
Introduction
The red-eared slider comes from a quiet part of the Mississippi River with lush vegetation in the south of the United States. During the day, these turtles are very active; when they’re not swimming, they like to sunbathe. Don’t panic when they become less active in winter: the red-eared slider hibernates!
Appearance
Red-eared sliders grow to a maximum size of around 30 cm. They get their name from the two parallel red stripes on the sides of their heads. The older the turtle, the darker these stripes become; they may even turn completely black! Young red-eared sliders have a mossy green shell which turns yellow-brown with dark brown patches when they reach adulthood.
Specifics in the EU
You are not allowed to import a red-eared slider into the EU. Consequently, if you own a red-eared slider, you must have proof of purchase to be able to prove that you have obtained your turtle legally.
